Padar before sunrise, step by step

Updated 3 November 2026

Padar sunrise hike by private phinisi: from Gammara you leave the boat about 65 minutes before sunrise and climb for 25 to 45 minutes to the main viewpoint. Sunrise falls between 05:31 and 06:18 depending on the month. Padar has no dragons.

Padar's steps, gradient and minutes

Padar is day 2 of the 3D2N route, and it comes first. The climb to the main viewpoint takes 25 to 45 minutes. The upper ridge takes longer. We rate the climb moderate: steady uphill, with parts of the path loose and steep underfoot.

The reward is a view over three bays whose sand is three different colours. The viewpoint is on the north side of the island.

Padar is a ridge, not a beach stop. There are no dragons on Padar. Nobody swims here, so this is a stop for legs and a camera, and it is the only stop on the route that asks you to be moving in the dark.

Gammara sits at anchor below while you climb, and breakfast follows on board when you return. The early start sets the rhythm for the day: Pink Beach, Komodo, Taka Makassar and Manta Point all follow on the same day 2, so a late start on Padar pushes everything after it.

When to step off the boat before dawn

The rule is simple: leave the boat about 65 minutes before sunrise. That gives the 25 to 45 minute climb plus a few minutes on the ridge before the sun clears it.

Sunrise on Padar runs from 05:31 in November to 06:18 in July. Your own month is in the table, and we will give you the exact leaving time once your date is set. The crew and the captain decide the knock on the door.

The 3D2N sample puts the climb on the morning of day 2, and the 6D5N sample moves it to day 3. Either way it is the first thing of the day, before breakfast and before the other stops, so go to bed the night before with your shoes already by the door.

Sky note. The sky lightens before the sun appears. The table time is the sun itself, not the first grey.

Clothing for dark steps

Wear closed shoes with a grip. Parts of the path are loose and steep, and sandals slip on dry gravel. Trainers are enough.

Bring a headtorch or a small torch you can hold in the same hand as a water bottle. A phone torch works for a few minutes, but it drains the battery you want for the view. Keep your hands free for the steep parts.

The first stretch is cool and the ridge is exposed, so a light layer you can tie round your waist is useful. By the time the sun is high, the same layer is in your bag.

A hat is worth carrying even at dawn. The climb down is in full light.

The day the captain says no

Padar depends on the sky and the sea. Rain on the path, a swell that makes landing awkward or a low cloud bank over the ridge can all move the climb to another day or take it off the route.

The captain decides, on the day, and the decision is not ours or yours to overrule. The brochure says the route changes with traffic, weather and tides, and Padar is one of the stops that changes.

When the sunrise is lost, the day still holds: Pink Beach and Komodo are on the same day and the boat does not wait for Padar. On a 4D3N or longer private route there is more room to move the climb to another morning.

We cannot print a refund rule for a missed stop. Weather at sea is handled case by case, in writing.

FAQ

Is the Padar climb hard for non-hikers?

It takes 25 to 45 minutes to the main viewpoint, uphill on a loose, steep path. Fit walkers manage it in trainers. If one of you prefers not to climb, you can stay on deck and watch the same sunrise from the water at anchor. Ask us before you book if knees are a worry.

What time is sunrise on Padar in our month?

Between 05:31 in November and 06:18 in July, all times WITA. The table on this page lists every month. Count back about 65 minutes for the moment you leave the boat. The captain confirms the knock time the evening before.
