Gammara Phinisi

A first visit to Indonesia, for two

Updated 3 November 2026

First time in Indonesia for a honeymoon on Gammara: four short tables cover entry papers, flights to Flores, money and health. Rules and prices change, so verify each one with the official source before you travel. We give the facts we have checked and say how sure we are.

Ask what to bring

Entry papers for a first Indonesian journey

Indonesia asks different things of different passports. Know yours. Some nationalities buy a visa on arrival, some apply online for an e-visa first, and some, from neighbouring countries, enter visa-free. The table sets out what we know and how sure we are of each line.

Verify every line on the official immigration portal before you buy a ticket. Fees, country lists and the length of stay are all revised from time to time, and look-alike websites charge extra for the same form. Apply only through the government's own site. A form bought elsewhere costs more and gains you nothing at the border, because the officer checks the passport and the approval, not the website you used.

Two papers are required of nearly everyone. Your passport needs enough validity after arrival, and an online arrival card must be filled in before you land. The table gives the detail. We cannot check your passport for you. We do not give legal advice. What we can do is tell you, plainly, which questions to ask the embassy or the airline before you pay for anything that cannot be refunded.

Visa on Arrival (VoA)Open to nationals of 97 listed countries, including most of Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan, South Korea, China, India and the Gulf states. Other nationalities apply in advance at evisa.imigrasi.go.id.
e-VoAThe same 30-day visa, applied for online before you travel at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Once approved, you must enter within 90 days.
VoA / e-VoA priceIDR 500,000 per person; children pay the same. Fees can change, so check the official site before you fly.
Length of stay30 days from the day you arrive, single entry
ExtensionOnce, by 30 days (60 days in total), for IDR 500,000. Apply at an immigration office about a week before the first 30 days end.
Visa-free entry30 days, not extendable, for citizens of ASEAN countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam.
PassportValid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with at least 2 blank pages
Onward ticketProof of a return or onward ticket is required for a VoA
All Indonesia arrival cardFree and compulsory. Fill it in within 72 hours before arrival at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or in the app; it covers immigration, customs and the health declaration.
Arriving in Labuan BajoMost visitors clear immigration in Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya and reach Labuan Bajo on a domestic flight
Bali tourist levyIDR 150,000 per foreign visitor if you enter through Bali, paid at lovebali.baliprov.go.id. It is separate from the visa fee.

Aeroplanes to Indonesia, then one more flight to Flores

A first visit means two flights. The first lands in a large hub: Bali or Jakarta for most couples, Surabaya for some. The second is a short domestic flight to Labuan Bajo on Flores. The table lists the hubs, the flying times and the airlines we have seen on the route, with a confidence mark beside each.

Treat timetables as indicative. Airlines add and drop routes, and direct international flights to Labuan Bajo are few. Check with the airline for your date, and leave a night between your long-haul flight and the boat. Jet lag and a missed connection are both hard to repair at 09:00 on a pier. Neither is our fault, and neither is rare.

Gammara's own pickup details live in the guide to the day you travel. This page covers only the general facts of flying into Indonesia.

Plastic, notes and rupiah

Money first. The currency is the rupiah. Rates move, so check a converter on the day you plan your cash. Cards work at hotels, larger restaurants and some operators, and some of those add a surcharge. Small shops, markets and taxis want cash.

Cash machines stand along the main road near the harbour and at the airport arrivals hall. There are none inside the park or on the islands. Each withdrawal has a limit and a fee, plus whatever your home bank charges. Take out what you need in town, before you board. Do it the day before, when you are not in a hurry and the machine in the hotel lobby is not the only one you can reach.

Tips are appreciated, never compulsory. The fare excludes crew gratuities, and a crew box passed round at the end of the trip is the way it is done on the boats. We set no figure. For payments to us, see the booking page; the channels and their fees are listed there.

CurrencyIndonesian rupiah (IDR); about IDR 16,000 to 16,500 to the US dollar and IDR 17,500 to 18,000 to the euro in mid-2026
ATMsBCA, Mandiri, BNI and BRI on Jl. Soekarno-Hatta near the harbour and at airport arrivals; none in the national park or on the islands. Take cash before you board.
ATM limitsIDR 1,250,000 to 3,000,000 per withdrawal; a local fee of about IDR 25,000 to 50,000, plus your own bank's charges
Cards or cashCards work at hotels, dive centres, boat companies and larger restaurants, often with a surcharge of 2 to 4 per cent. Small eateries, markets, taxis and small shops take cash.
TippingAppreciated, never compulsory. In restaurants 5 to 10 per cent when no service charge is added; for a boat crew, IDR 50,000 to 100,000 per guest per day is a common range.

Sunscreen, bottled water, the small pharmacy

Drink bottled or filtered water only. Always. Tap water is not safe to drink in Indonesia. Bottled mineral water is on the boat.

Mosquitoes carry dengue and chikungunya, and malaria is present in parts of the country, so cover your arms in the evening and use repellent. Ask your own doctor about vaccines well before you fly, because some courses take weeks. A bite from a dog or a monkey needs care at once.

Pharmacies in Labuan Bajo have a limited choice. The islands have none. Bring your prescriptions, plasters, sunscreen and any tablets you rely on, in their original packaging, with a note from your doctor if the medicine is one that an airport officer could question. A hat and closed shoes with a good grip matter more than most pills. Sun is the commonest injury on the trip.

Travel insurance with medical cover is strongly recommended. Cover that includes evacuation is worth having.

InsuranceTravel insurance with medical cover and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended; add dive cover if you dive

FAQ

Is travel insurance worth buying for a honeymoon on a boat?

Yes. Travel insurance with medical cover is strongly recommended, and it is excluded from the fare. Choose a policy that includes medical evacuation, because serious cases are flown out of Labuan Bajo. Divers must also carry dive insurance, which is mandatory and not part of the fare.

Are there cash machines in Labuan Bajo, and how much rupiah should we carry?

Cash machines stand along the main road near the harbour and at the airport arrivals hall. None stands inside the park or on the islands. Each withdrawal has a limit and a fee, so take out what you need in town. Carry small notes for tips and snacks, and use cards for hotels.

How much do we tip the crew?

Tips are appreciated and never compulsory. The fare excludes crew gratuities, and the usual way is a crew box passed round at the end of the trip. We set no figure, and nothing is added to your bill. Take small notes in rupiah from town before you board.
